What a Greek food export programme actually involves
A Greek food export programme is not a purchase order. It is a chain of decisions, each of which can quietly break a listing: which producer, which harvest or production batch, which recipe tolerance, which pack format, which label version, which certification body, which port, which Incoterm and which documentation set the destination customs authority expects on the day of arrival.
theGreex takes responsibility for that whole chain. We qualify producers, negotiate on your behalf in Greek, control the specification in writing, supervise production and loading, and hand you a clean documentary pack. You keep the commercial relationship with your customers, we keep the operational relationship with Greece.
- Producer qualification and audit review before any sample leaves Greece
- Written technical specification agreed between you and the manufacturer
- Sample rounds, shelf-life and organoleptic sign-off
- Artwork, labelling and legal declaration control for the destination market
- Production planning against your promotional and seasonal calendar
- Loading supervision, documentation and post-shipment follow-up
Why importers source food from Greece
Greece supplies a category of products that consumers already trust before they read the label. Extra virgin olive oil, table olives, Feta PDO, strained yoghurt, honey, vinegars and Mediterranean antipasti carry an origin story that other origins have to buy with marketing spend.
Commercially, Greece is also a practical origin. Production is fragmented across thousands of small and mid-sized manufacturers, which means genuine flexibility on recipes, formats and minimum order quantities that large industrial origins cannot match. Piraeus and Thessaloniki give weekly sailings to most of the world, and intra-EU road freight reaches Central Europe in days.
Why buyers work with theGreex rather than a trading house
theGreex is a sourcing and export company, not a broker reselling whatever is available this week. We are an export-oriented team based in Athens with more than twenty years of combined experience shipping Greek food to demanding retail and foodservice customers.
The practical difference is accountability. A broker passes you a price. We pass you a producer file: audit status, certification scope, production capacity, previous export markets, packaging capability and the commercial terms we have negotiated. If a batch drifts from the agreed specification, we do not renegotiate the specification. We fix the batch.
- Direct producer relationships, no hidden intermediate layer
- Transparent cost structure, you know what the product costs and what our service costs
- Written specifications and traceability from grove or dairy to container
- One counterparty for a multi-category Greek range
- Communication in English with producers who only operate in Greek
Our sourcing network across Greece
Our producer network is regional by design, because Greek food quality is regional. Olive oil behaves differently in Messinia, Lakonia, Crete and Halkidiki. Feta is not the same product from Epirus, Thessaly and Macedonia. Antipasti and preserves are concentrated around northern Greece, while artisanal pasta and rusks remain a Cretan and island specialty.
| Region | What we source there | Typical production profile |
|---|---|---|
| Messinia & Lakonia | Kalamata PDO olive oil, Kalamata table olives | Mills and cooperatives, strong PDO discipline |
| Crete | Koroneiki extra virgin olive oil, rusks, handmade pasta | High-polyphenol early harvest, family mills |
| Halkidiki & Macedonia | Green Halkidiki olives, stuffed olives, antipasti | Larger BRCGS-certified processors |
| Epirus & Thessaly | Feta PDO, strained yoghurt, dairy specialties | Mountain dairies with controlled milk pools |
| Peloponnese | Vinegars, jams, spreads, dips | Mid-size plants with private label experience |
| Aegean islands | Sea salt, capers, regional specialties | Micro-producers, limited annual volumes |
Quality standards and how we enforce them
Every product we export carries an agreed specification sheet before the first commercial order. For olive oil that includes free acidity, peroxide value, K232 and K270, organoleptic panel result and, where relevant, polyphenol content. For dairy it includes fat in dry matter, salt, pH, microbiology and shelf-life protocol. For ambient preserves it covers Brix, pH, drained weight, headspace and seal integrity.
Testing is performed by accredited third-party laboratories in Greece, and we retain counter-samples for every export batch so that any customer complaint can be investigated against a physical reference rather than an opinion.
- Pre-shipment analysis on every batch of oil, dairy and high-risk preserves
- Counter-samples retained for the full shelf life
- Loading supervision with photographic evidence and temperature control where required
- Corrective action process agreed with the producer in advance, not after a claim
Certifications available across our supply base
- BRCGS Food Safety and IFS Food at our principal processors
- ISO 22000 and HACCP across the wider network
- EU Organic certification, plus NOP and JAS where the producer is already approved
- PDO and PGI compliance for Feta, Kalamata olive oil, Kalamata olives and regional specialties
- Kosher and Halal certification available on selected lines
- Non-GMO, gluten-free and allergen declarations supported with documentation
Export capabilities and order structures
Most buyers start with one of four structures, and many run several in parallel as the range matures.
| Structure | Best for | Typical entry volume |
|---|---|---|
| Producer brand | Testing a market with minimal investment | 1 pallet per SKU, mixed container |
| Private label | Retailers and distributors building an own-brand range | From 1,000 to 3,000 units per SKU |
| Bulk and industrial | Bottlers, repackers and food manufacturers | Flexitank, IBC, drums, 200kg dairy barrels |
| Co-packing and development | Buyers with a defined recipe or format brief | Project-based, agreed per programme |
MOQ flexibility for first orders
The single most common reason a Greek sourcing project stalls is a minimum order quantity mismatch. A producer quotes a full container of one SKU, the buyer needs six SKUs to make a listing viable, and the conversation ends.
We solve this by consolidating. Because we buy across a network rather than from one factory, we can build a mixed pallet or a mixed container across categories, so your first shipment can contain olive oil, olives, dairy, antipasti and preserves from different producers under one invoice and one set of documents.
- Trial orders from a single mixed pallet
- Mixed 20ft or 40ft containers across multiple producers and categories
- Private label MOQs negotiated per SKU rather than per producer
- Scaling plan agreed up front so pricing improves predictably with volume
Private label capability
Private label is where margin lives for most importers and retailers, and where most Greek sourcing projects fail on execution rather than product. We manage the full development cycle: format selection, recipe adjustment, packaging sourcing, artwork adaptation for destination legislation, nutritional and allergen declarations, barcode allocation, shelf-life validation and pre-production print approval.
- Glass, PET, tin, pouch, bag-in-box and food service formats
- Label legality checked against EU 1169/2011 and destination-market rules
- Nutritional panels produced from certified analysis, not from generic tables
- Print proofs and first-production samples approved before the run
Logistics from Greece to your warehouse
We ship from Piraeus and Thessaloniki by sea, and by road groupage or full truck into the EU and the Balkans. Ambient, chilled and temperature-controlled loads are all handled; dairy moves under a controlled cold chain with data loggers where the destination requires them.
- Incoterms 2020: EXW, FCA, FOB, CFR, CIF and DAP
- Full container, groupage and mixed-pallet consolidation
- Chilled and ambient loads, temperature logging on request
- Complete document sets: invoice, packing list, EUR.1 or origin certificate, health certificate, phytosanitary, certificate of analysis and PDO documentation where applicable
Markets we serve
We currently ship to buyers across the European Union, the United Kingdom, the Gulf states, North America and Japan. Each of those destinations has its own labelling, certification and documentation profile, and we prepare shipments to that profile rather than to a generic export template.
- EU and UK retail and foodservice, including own-brand programmes
- GCC importers requiring Halal documentation and Arabic labelling
- North American importers requiring FDA registration and nutrition facts formatting
- Japanese and Asian specialty importers with strict residue and documentation requirements
Frequently asked questions
What does theGreex actually do as a Greek food exporter?
We identify and qualify Greek producers against your brief, negotiate commercial terms, control the product specification, manage private label development where required, supervise production and loading, and handle export documentation and shipping. You deal with one accountable counterparty instead of a dozen factories.
Can I import Greek food if I only need small quantities at first?
Yes. Because we consolidate across our producer network, a first order can be a single mixed pallet containing several categories. That lets you test the market and build a listing before committing to full-container volumes.
Do you supply wholesale Greek food under existing producer brands?
Yes. Many buyers start with producer-branded lines, which require no artwork investment and a lower entry volume, then move to private label once the range proves itself.
Which Greek food categories can you export?
Extra virgin olive oil, table olives, Feta and Greek cheeses, strained yoghurt, antipasti, dips and meze, spreads, jams, chutneys, vinegars, artisanal pasta, sauces, preserved fruits and premium delicatessen specialties.
How do you select Greek food manufacturers?
Qualification covers certification scope and validity, audit history, production and packing capacity, export track record, financial stability, and a physical visit. We only present producers we have seen operating.
What documentation comes with a shipment?
Commercial invoice, packing list, bill of lading or CMR, preferential origin document, certificate of analysis, health certificate for products of animal origin, phytosanitary certificate where required, organic transaction certificate for organic goods, and PDO or PGI documentation where the product is protected.
Can you handle multiple categories in one shipment?
Yes, and this is one of the main reasons buyers work with us. A single container can carry olive oil, olives, dairy and ambient preserves from different producers, consolidated under one commercial and documentary framework.
How long does a first Greek food export order take?
For producer-branded goods held in stock, typically three to five weeks from confirmed order to loading. For private label, allow eight to twelve weeks for the first production including artwork approval and packaging lead times, then four to six weeks for repeat orders.
Do you provide samples before an order?
Yes. We send a curated sample set matched to your brief, with the corresponding specification sheets and indicative FOB pricing, so your team can evaluate product and commercials together.
How is your pricing structured?
Transparently. You see the product cost and the service structure, quoted on the Incoterm you request, so you can build landed cost and shelf margin without guessing what sits inside the price.
