Greek sourcing for buyers who need the right producer, not another supplier list

Sourcing in Greece is not a discovery problem, it is a verification problem. There are thousands of Greek suppliers and very little reliable information about which of them can actually serve an export programme. Our job is to close that information gap before you commit money to it.

The real cost of sourcing Greece from a distance

Buyers who try to source food from Greece remotely usually follow the same path: trade fair contacts, an online directory, a handful of emails, three samples, one order, and then a quality or delivery incident that costs more than the margin the project was supposed to generate.

The failure is rarely the product. Greek food quality at the top of the market is exceptional. The failure is structural: the producer had capacity for the sample but not for the season, the certificate covered a different line, the label was compliant in Greece but not in the destination market, or the recipe drifted once the pilot batch became a production run.

Why Greece rewards a structured sourcing approach

Greek food manufacturing is dominated by small and medium enterprises, many of them family-owned and operating within a single region. That structure is exactly why Greece can offer genuine differentiation: single-estate oils, mountain dairies, traditional recipes and formats that industrial origins have standardised away.

The same structure means capability varies enormously between two producers making a visually identical product. One exports to four continents under BRCGS. The other has never issued an export invoice. Both will say yes to your enquiry. Structured sourcing is what separates them.

Why theGreex, and what makes our sourcing different

We are a Greek company with an export-oriented team, working on the ground with producers we visit rather than producers we email. We negotiate in Greek, at Greek commercial norms, and we report to you in English against a written brief.

Critically, we are not a broker holding stock we need to move. Our recommendation is driven by fit with your brief, not by what we happen to have. If the right answer is that Greece is not competitive for a specific line, we tell you that too.

  • Physical producer visits before shortlisting
  • Commercial negotiation handled locally, in Greek
  • Independent recommendation, no stock position to defend
  • Continuity, the same team follows the programme after the first order

Our producer network and how we keep it honest

The network covers olive oil mills, table olive processors, dairies, ambient preserve plants, vinegar producers, artisanal pasta workshops and regional specialty makers. It is deliberately not exhaustive: we would rather work with a producer we know can perform than list every factory in the country.

Producers are reviewed continuously. Certification renewals, audit grades, capacity changes and any quality incident are recorded against the producer file, and a producer that fails to correct an issue is removed from the network for the affected line.

Quality standards applied during sourcing

  • Written specification agreed before commercial commitment
  • Accredited third-party laboratory analysis on qualification and production batches
  • Organoleptic assessment for oils and table olives by trained panels
  • Shelf-life validation appropriate to the format and destination climate
  • Documented corrective action route with each producer

Certification verification

We treat every certification claim as unverified until we hold the certificate, confirm the issuing body, check the scope covers the exact line and format, and diarise the expiry date. Buyers receive the certification pack as part of the producer file.

  • BRCGS, IFS, ISO 22000, HACCP
  • EU Organic, with NOP and JAS where already held
  • PDO and PGI scheme compliance and control body confirmation
  • Kosher and Halal where required by the destination market

Export capability of the network

Sourcing only creates value if the producer can actually export. We assess export readiness as part of qualification: does the plant have export packaging, can it palletise to your standard, can it produce the labelling you need, and has it shipped to your destination before?

  • Retail, foodservice, bulk and industrial formats
  • Export pallet configurations and stackable case design
  • Multi-language labelling capability
  • Container and groupage loading experience

MOQ flexibility through consolidation

Because we source across a network rather than from a single plant, we can construct a first order that no individual Greek producer would accept: several categories, several producers, one shipment, one invoice, one document set. That is usually the difference between a project that launches and one that stays on a spreadsheet.

Private label sourcing in Greece

Private label in Greece is realistic at volumes that surprise most buyers, provided the packaging and artwork side is managed properly. We handle producer selection for own-brand capability, format and packaging sourcing, artwork adaptation, declaration accuracy and pre-production approval, then lock the recipe and specification so the second run matches the first.

Logistics coordination

  • Consolidation at bonded and ambient warehousing near Piraeus and Thessaloniki
  • Sea, road groupage and full truck options
  • Incoterms 2020 quoted on request, from EXW to DAP
  • Loading supervision with photographic records

Markets served

Our sourcing clients are importers, distributors, retail own-brand teams, food manufacturers and foodservice groups across the EU, the United Kingdom, the Gulf, North America and Asia. Each brief is executed against the regulatory and commercial profile of the destination, not against a generic export standard.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a sourcing company and a trading company in Greece?

A trading company sells you goods it owns or controls, so its recommendation follows its stock position. A sourcing company works from your brief, qualifies producers independently and is paid for the service of getting the match right. theGreex operates as a sourcing company.

How do you find Greek suppliers that are not in public directories?

Through the network we have built on the ground over two decades: producer referrals, regional cooperatives, technologists, laboratories and certification bodies. Many of the strongest small Greek manufacturers have no English website and no directory listing.

Can you source a product to a specific recipe or specification?

Yes. Development briefs are one of our most common projects. We identify producers with the right technology and flexibility, run trial batches against your target profile, and lock the approved specification before commercial production.

Do you charge a commission or a service fee?

Both models are available depending on the programme. What does not vary is transparency: you always know what the product costs and what our service costs.

Will I know who the producer is?

Yes. We are not built on hiding the factory. Buyers receive producer files and, for serious programmes, we arrange plant visits so you can meet the people making your product.

Is private label in Greece possible at low volumes?

Often yes, typically from 1,000 to 3,000 units per SKU depending on the category and packaging. Packaging minimums, not production minimums, are usually the constraint, and we work around them by selecting stock formats where possible.

How long does a sourcing project take from brief to first shipment?

A straightforward brief on existing producer-branded lines can ship in six to eight weeks. A private label development programme typically runs three to four months to the first container.

Do you visit the producers?

Always, before we shortlist them, and again during production for new or complex programmes. Remote qualification alone is not sufficient in a market structured around small family businesses.

Can you handle categories outside your published range?

Frequently. The published categories reflect where we have depth today. If your brief sits adjacent to them, we will tell you honestly whether we can source it well or whether you would be better served elsewhere.
